Year 1 2018 - 2019

Miss Saunders

Year 1 teacher

Welcome to Year 1

The Key Stage 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception and/or Year 1. We will be planning on lots of practical and child initiated learning opportunities for the children to access. There will also be more formal learning where the children will be grouped according to ability which allows more focussed progressive learning, as well as some additional mixed ability challenges.

There is a big focus on learning through our Topic. Each week we have inspiration lessons to excite and inspire the children. We aim to have fun, work hard and create something beautiful.

Autumn Term 2017

This term we are looking at London. During Autumn 1 we will be looking at the different countries that make up the United Kingdom and their features. We will also be focusing on capital cities and London. Our literacy and maths lessons will link into this as much as possible. Please see the knowledge sheet attached for home learning inspiration for you.

During Autumn 2 we will then be looking at the Great Fire of London.

Class Information

P.E. days
Please make sure your child has a suitable PE kit for both indoor and outdoor PE in school. Also, can we just ask that if your child is wearing tights for school, that they bring some socks to wear for P.E. Children must not wear earrings for PE so please ensure they are taken out at the beginning of the day or your child knows how to remove them. Please see your child's class PE timetable below:

Year 1 (Miss Saunders)

Year 1/2 (Miss Green)

Year 2 (Miss Saven)

Water Bottles - Please make sure that your child has a water bottle in school, labelled with their name.

Homework - please find the spelling, maths and topic knowledge sheets attached for your child's homework this half term.

Independent Learning - an activity listed on your knowledge sheet can be used to complete an independent learning task in your child's homework book every week. These books are to be kept at home for the whole half term and returned on the last Monday before our half term break.

We complete a 1k run every day so please send in suitable running shoes for your child to wear. The trainers should be velcro unless your child can tie shoe laces.

How You Can Help!

So much happens in Key Stage1! Because of this, the year will be full of important transitions. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready. Maintaining each child's self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in our first grade. Here are some ways you can help:

• Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem. This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work!

• Read to and with your child everyday. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom. It also helps with their confidence building. Remember to record all reading in your child's reading book, recording an 'H' in a circle to show that your child has read at 'Home'.

We are looking forward to a working with your child this year and helping him/her to achieve his/her full potential.
