Year 3 2017 - 2018

Miss Raven

Year 3 teacher

Welcome to Year 3!

Autumn Term

We will be learning about the Stone Age in our first half term and then continuing our journey through the prehistoric times into the Bronze Age and the Iron Age in Autumn Term 2.

English

We will be looking at setting descriptions and longer narratives using the book 'Stone Age Boy' by Satoshi Kitamura as our inspiration.  Following this, we will progress onto diary entries using episodes of 'Dawn of the Croods' as our starting stimulus.

Maths

We will be learning all about place value, including more formal methods for addition and subtraction, particularly looking at three-digit numbers.  We will then focus on multiplication and division before half term and recapping their knowledge of the 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables before moving onto their 9, 6 and 8 times tables.  Any support with times tables outside of school would be greatly appreciated!

Homework

Maths homework

At the beginning of each half term, the children will receive a set of Maths facts (including times tables) for them to learn at home, which will then be tested every Friday in school.  We will also be supporting your child in class with these.  A copy of these sheets can be found in the relevant Parent Information Booklet below (available after our welcome meeting with all parents/carers on Wednesday 13th September).

Spelling homework

At the beginning of each half term, the children will receive a set of spelling words (grouped into weeks) for them to learn at home, which will then be tested every Friday in school.  We will also be supporting your child in class with these.  A copy of these sheets can be found in the relevant Parent Information Booklet below (available after our welcome meeting with all parents/carers on Wednesday 13th September).

Topic homework

At the beginning of each half term, the children will receive a topic knowledge sheet with facts for them to learn at home.  The children now have independent learning books, which is a place for them to create a range of beautiful work about our topic over this half term. In the second half term, the children are free to choose a topic of their own choice.  The children should be aiming to complete at least one piece of work per week in their books and these should be brought back into school by the Wednesday of the last week of each half term so that they can be marked and returned back to your child before the half term break.  Guidance about what kind of work they can present is in the front of the books, however if you have any further questions about them, please feel free to ask.

For your reference, we will be covering the following topics during this year (cycle A):

Term Topic/theme
Autumn (up to Christmas) The Stone Age, The Bronze Age and The Iron Age
Spring (up to Easter) Violent World
Summer (up to Summer) The Vikings

Reading homework

With regards to reading, the children should be reading at home for at least 15-20 minutes each night and a small comment in their reading record to show this would be greatly appreciated.  As a whole school, we expect the children to read at least five times every week.  In Year 3, the children are old enough to write their own comments in their Reading Records but please ensure an adult has at least commented or signed their signature once every week.  Please write an H in a circle to indicate that they have read at home.

PE

PE is usually on a Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon but please have your child's PE kit in school every day.  In addition to this, we also complete a 1km run every day so please send in suitable running shoes for your child to wear.  Please also make sure that your child has a water bottle in school, labelled with their name.

Maths Calculation Methods

Please go to the 'Y3/4 class page' to see videos and the 'Y3-4 Calculation methods' document to find out how we teach the main four calculations to the children in Year 3 and Year 4.

Any updates or news regarding the curriculum and homework will be found on our Year 3 homepage.  If you want further information, please browse through our 'Parent Pack', which are available via the links below.  I am always available to talk to parents and carers.  Please just see me to arrange a time.
