Year 6 2018 - 2019

Mrs McDonald

Year 6 teacher

The Upper Key Stage 2 curriculum builds upon and extends on the experiences that children have had in Lower Key Stage 2.  Throughout the school there is a big focus on learning through our Topic. Each week we have ignition lessons to excite and inspire the children. We aim to have fun, work hard and create something beautiful.

Autumn Term 2017

The Maya Civilisation and Central American rainforests.

This term we are looking at the Maya civilisation and rainforests in Central America. During Autumn 1 we will be looking at where the Maya civilisation spread to, their culture and beliefs, buildings and technology, their number system, food and why they disappeared. We will even having a go at playing a special Mayan team game called Pok-a-Tok!

During Autumn 2 we will focus on the rainforests where Mayan culture thrived and we study rainforest biomes, climate, land use, their destruction and conversation. We will also compare rainforest environments to Woodland areas in Britain. Our literacy and maths lessons will link into these topics as much as possible.

During Autumn 1 we will focus on writing mythical stories and non-chronological reports linked to our history topic on the Maya where we will focus on varying sentence structure, improving our spelling and ensuring that we use a variety of features to interest the reader. In Autumn 2 we will write science-fiction stories and learn how to structure a balanced argument.

In the Autumn Term we will be building on the skills the children have learnt in Years 3/4 with a focus on formal written methods for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as understanding the addition and subtraction of fractions.

Class Information

P.E. days
Please make sure your child has a suitable PE kit for both indoor and outdoor PE in school. Also, can we just ask that if your child is wearing tights for school, that they bring some socks to wear for P.E. Children must not wear earrings for PE so please ensure they are taken out at the beginning of the day or your child knows how to remove them.

This term Year 5 and 6 have P.E. on Mondays and swimming on Thursdays. Please ensure that your child brings the correct kit on these days.

We complete a 1k run every day so please send in suitable running shoes for your child to wear and a water bottle which has been labelled with their name on.

Homework - please find the spelling, maths and topic knowledge sheets attached for your child's homework this half term. Spelling and maths knowledge is tested weekly on a Wednesday while the topic knowledge will be tested at the end of the Autumn term, in the last week before the Christmas break.

Independent Learning - an activity listed inside your child's Independent Learning books can be used to complete an independent learning task in your child's homework book every week. These books are to be kept at home for the whole half term and returned on the last Wednesday before our half term break. Autumn 1's focus is on the Maya while Autumn 2 is the child's free choice of topic to research.

How You Can Help!

• Celebrate your child's success, no matter how small it may seem. This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work!

* Encourage your child to practise their times-tables, spelling and mental maths knowledge at home as often as possible.

• Ensure that your child reads every day. The more your child is exposed to ambitious language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom. It also helps with their confidence building. Remember to record all reading in your child's reading book, recording an 'H' in a circle to show that your child has read at 'Home'.
